Despite AC Milan's Coppa Italia exit at the hands of Lazio, Massimiliano Allegri remains optimistic about the team's future. The Serie A leaders suffered a disappointing defeat, but Allegri believes it's not a setback, especially considering their strong position in the league.
A Stepping Stone, Not a Stumbling Block
Milan, fresh from their 2024-25 Coppa Italia final appearance, fell in the last 16 to Lazio. Mattia Zaccagni's late header sealed a 1-0 win for Lazio, but Allegri is not letting this loss dampen his spirits.
"Absolutely not!" Allegri exclaimed. "We must learn from this, but we can't dwell on it. We have a lot to look forward to."
And he's right. Just five days prior, Milan beat Maurizio Sarri's team by the same scoreline, ensuring they top Serie A on goal difference.
Looking Ahead with Allegri
Allegri's focus is on the future. "We have two crucial Serie A games coming up, and then we'll be ready for the Supercoppa Italiana," he said.
The match against Lazio was tight, with few clear-cut chances. Lazio managed just 0.55 expected goals (xG) from their 11 attempts, while Milan generated chances worth only 0.97 xG.
"Lazio took advantage of our mistakes," Allegri acknowledged. "We gifted them chances, and we need to be more clinical and defend better."
The Challenge of Dominance
And this is the part most people miss: Allegri's team has been dominant in many games this season, but they haven't always converted that dominance into wins.
"It's a fine line we're walking," Allegri explained. "When we're in control and don't finish, it becomes a dangerous game. We've seen it against Cremonese and Pisa. We need to improve our efficiency."
So, while the Coppa Italia exit is a disappointment, it's not a cause for panic. Allegri and his team are focused on learning from their mistakes and improving, ensuring they stay at the top of Serie A.
