Lead author Yvette Cendes, an Assistant Professor at the University of Oregon, and her team have been tracking this event. They've observed a continuous increase in radio brightness, with the black hole now shining 50 times brighter than when it was first detected.

But how is this possible? Two theories have emerged to explain this rising radio luminosity. The first suggests a "delayed spherical outflow," where the outflow was launched about 620 days after the initial disruption. The second theory proposes an astrophysical jet, highly off-axis and moving at incredible speeds.

"This is really unusual," Cendes remarked. "It's hard to imagine anything rising in power like this over such an extended period."

When the researchers calculated the black hole's energy output, they were in for another shock. It's on par with the energy released by a gamma-ray burst, the brightest and most energetic explosions in the universe. To put this into perspective, the authors compared it to the Death Star. Using fan-calculated energy outputs, they found that this black hole is emitting at least one trillion times more energy than a fully operational Death Star, and possibly as much as 100 trillion times more!

But here's the catch: these calculations are based on observations from a distance. Ongoing observations are needed to confirm their accuracy.

This discovery raises an important question: are there other black holes and tidal disruptions out there with similar rising radiation? The answer, surprisingly, is that we don't know because no one has really looked.

"If you have an explosion, why would you expect to see something years later when you didn't see anything before?" Cendes asks. She highlights the competitive nature of acquiring observation time on powerful telescopes, but now that they've found this extraordinary black hole, their future proposals will carry more weight.

While AT2018hyz isn't the only TDE with delayed radio emissions, its luminosity is off the charts compared to others.

"We've found that AT2018hyz is a unique TDE, even among those with delayed radio emission," the authors write.

Cendes and her team plan to continue their observations across multiple frequencies, monitoring the evolution of the outflow and the surrounding medium.

This black hole's power is a reminder of the vast, mysterious universe we inhabit, and the many wonders yet to be discovered.
