A thrilling conclusion to the UAE Tour Women's race saw Elisa Longo Borghini claim her third overall victory in four years, capping off an impressive performance on the iconic Jebel Hafeet stage. But here's where it gets controversial...
Longo Borghini, the defending champion, proved her dominance once again by launching a solo attack with just over three kilometers remaining. Despite a brief comeback attempt by Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney, the Polish champion couldn't keep up, eventually being passed by Monica Trinca Colonel and Femke de Vries.
The race unfolded with several key moments. After Marlen Reusser's DNS on stage 3, Anna van der Breggen's illness forced her to withdraw, leaving the GC contenders list shorter. From the very start of the 156km stage, Sara Luccon took the initiative, aiming to reclaim the intermediate sprint jersey.
Luccon's lead grew to an impressive 3:35 minutes, allowing her to take the lead in the intermediate sprint classification. However, the young Italian rider chose to wait for the peloton, not wanting to face the challenging Green Mubazzarah alone.
As the race progressed, Amber van der Hulst made a break, but the peloton, aided by tail-crosswinds, quickly reined her in. Several attacks followed, but it was on the final climb that the race truly ignited.
UAE Team ADQ took control, reducing the peloton to a select group of riders. Longo Borghini, along with Niewiadoma-Phinney and others, formed a front group. Fisher-Black and Trinca Colonel attempted attacks, but Niewiadoma-Phinney kept them in check.
With just over four kilometers to go, Longo Borghini launched her decisive move, leaving Niewiadoma-Phinney behind. The Polish climber fought back, but Longo Borghini's acceleration was too much, securing her solo victory and the overall win.
De Vries and Trinca Colonel passed Niewiadoma-Phinney on the penultimate kilometer, with Trinca Colonel's attack on the final ramp earning her valuable bonus seconds and a higher GC position.
The results saw Eleonora Ciabocco, aged 21, win the white jersey for the best U23 rider, while Lorena Wiebes, a three-time stage winner, claimed the green points jersey. Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto took the team classification.
