The setting, a spacious concrete hall within the Institut du Monde Arabe, created an atmosphere that was both serene and captivating. Models and mannequins stood side by side in perfect harmony, inviting guests to slowly appreciate the garments before a runway performance that was part fashion, part art.
A neutral color palette of tan, black, and white added to the sense of tranquility, while the absence of grand gestures emphasized the purposeful simplicity of the clothing. Ahmed and Razan Hassan, the creative duo behind KML, believe in stripping clothes back to their essence.
Ahmed's designs for the Saudi-based label draw inspiration from the rich cultural exchange between the Middle East and Asia over centuries. Many pieces exude an ascetic quality, reminiscent of the cassocks of Catholic priests, the Kasaya of Buddhist monks, or the Samue of Japanese Zen monks. Ahmed finds joy in these cultural parallels.
The collection features robes that wrap and fold around the body, capes that transform into new shapes, and jackets that can be fastened or transformed with hidden interior straps. A Nehru-collar jacket, tailored to perfection, is worn as a dress for women and a suit jacket for men. Traditional Bisht cloaks are reimagined with voluminous sleeves, inspired by garments originally designed to provide head-to-toe protection from the elements.
Transformation is a key principle in Ahmed's work. Pants with flaps and extended panels can wrap around the body or trail behind, while skirts draw from various Saudi Arabian menswear traditions, ranging from flowing Western styles to more fitted southern designs. Fabrics play a crucial role, with stiff canvas-lined wool creating sculptural shapes and gauzy chiffon versions of Agarwal trousers offering a relaxed fit. And here's the twist: every piece in this menswear collection can be adapted for both men and women.
The collection's spiritual essence was further emphasized by the presence of Zamzam water, a Saudi spring water believed to possess healing properties. Displayed in crystal glasses, it added a subtle yet powerful element to the show.
