Last Chance to See Australia’s Dazzling Maratus Spiders: Spiders of Paradise Exhibition (2026)

Don't miss your final opportunity to witness the breathtaking beauty of Australia’s most stunning spiders! The City of Casey is excited to invite community members to visit the exhibition "Maria Fernanda Cardoso: Spiders of Paradise" at Bunjil Place Gallery, which is set to close on Sunday, February 22.

Renowned artist Maria Fernanda Cardoso merges art, science, and nature in this remarkable exhibition that honors the fascinating Australian Maratus spider. These tiny arachnids, measuring less than 5mm, are celebrated for their brilliant colors and intricate mating displays. This exhibition provides a rare chance for audiences to delve into the hidden lives of these small yet extraordinary creatures.

According to Mayor Cr Stefan Koomen, attending the exhibition promises an unforgettable experience. "I was astonished by the beauty of these spiders and the intricate details that come to life when viewed at this scale. Although they’re minuscule in real life, the transformation into these magnificent artworks is truly remarkable and will leave a lasting impression," he remarked.

The exhibition showcases large-scale photographic portraits crafted from over 1,000 individual images, in collaboration with scientific imager Geoff Thompson and Queensland entomologist Andy Wang. This carefully curated collection reveals the astonishing colors and details of these spiders that often go unnoticed.

Additionally, an immersive video installation captures the complex courtship dance of the Maratus spider, illustrating the sophisticated ways these creatures communicate through vibrations and movements.

Seize this last chance to experience the allure and wonder of Australia's exceptional Maratus spiders at the Bunjil Place Gallery! The exhibition "Maria Fernanda Cardoso: Spiders of Paradise" has been developed and toured by the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, with support from the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its arts funding and advisory body, as well as backing from the NSW Government via Create NSW.
