Meet Eeva Primmer: New Executive Director of SEI (2026)

A New Era Dawns at SEI: Eeva Primmer Takes the Helm as Executive Director!

Get ready for a fresh wave of leadership at the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) as Eeva Primmer steps into the pivotal role of Executive Director, commencing her tenure on May 1, 2026. This appointment marks a significant moment, bringing a wealth of experience from the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) where she has been instrumental as Research Director since 2019. But here's where it gets truly impactful: Primmer's leadership at Syke wasn't just about managing research; she was the driving force behind ensuring its quality, integrity, and real-world impact. She championed crucial work on societal change and information quality, a vital bridge ensuring that scientific findings actively inform and bolster policy and implementation, steering us toward a more sustainable future.

And this is the part most people miss: Primmer's influence extends far beyond her national institution. Since 2020, she has also served as the first deputy to Syke’s Director General, demonstrating her readiness for high-level leadership. Her engagement in international science-policy arenas is equally impressive. She's a distinguished Bureau Member of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and a Panel Member of the UNEP International Resource Panel (IRP). Through these global platforms, she has been a key architect in shaping international dialogues on biodiversity, resource governance, and sustainability, with a laser focus on how robust evidence can empower better decision-making.

Lennart Båge, the SEI Board Chair, couldn't have been more enthusiastic, stating, "Eeva perfectly blends extensive leadership acumen with profound scientific expertise, particularly in the critical fields of evidence-based decision-making and international science-policy processes. In these challenging and dynamic times, she is precisely the leader SEI needs to continue our vital work in connecting science, policy, and practice."

With a foundational background in forestry and a PhD in Agriculture and Forestry from the University of Helsinki, Primmer also holds the esteemed title of adjunct professor (Docent) of Environmental Policy. Her academic pursuits delve deeply into environmental governance, ecosystem services, biodiversity, and natural resource management, with a special emphasis on how our institutions and organizations can effectively adapt to the complexities of environmental challenges. This holistic view is crucial for tackling the multifaceted problems we face today.

When discussing SEI’s core mission of weaving together research, policy, and practice, Primmer eloquently highlights the indispensable need to integrate diverse streams of knowledge. She emphasizes, "Successfully addressing sustainability challenges demands not only rigorous knowledge production about the workings of people, organizations, institutions, and processes, but also a profound deepening of our understanding of ecosystems and the environment. We truly need a genuine integration of these knowledge streams to significantly enhance our decision-making capabilities."

Now, here's a point that might spark some debate: Is it truly possible to achieve genuine integration of such diverse knowledge streams, or are we destined to see them remain somewhat siloed, despite our best efforts? Primmer's vision is clear, and SEI is eager for you to learn more about her priorities. In the coming months, SEI will be offering various opportunities to meet her and gain deeper insights into her plans for the Institute. What are your thoughts on the integration of science and policy? Do you believe it's happening effectively today, or are there significant hurdles yet to overcome? Share your perspectives in the comments below – we'd love to hear your agreement or disagreement!
