Perth 7s Highlights: A Journey of Challenges and Triumphs
On February 10, 2026, the Great Britain Men’s and Women’s rugby teams embarked on an exciting adventure in Australia as part of the HSBC SVNS series. The Men’s squad celebrated a hard-earned victory over New Zealand while narrowly missing out on a win against Australia by just three points.
The Women's team kicked off their tournament facing off against Australia, followed by matches against Canada, and concluding their pool stage with a game against France. After a disappointing loss to Japan in the semi-final for 5th place on Sunday, they then faced Fiji in the battle for 7th place but ultimately fell short, finishing the tournament in eighth position.
The men began their campaign with a challenging match against France, where they unfortunately suffered a defeat. However, they bounced back remarkably in their next match against New Zealand, currently ranked third overall, claiming a thrilling 26-19 victory that showcased the potential and ability they have been striving to demonstrate. Following this, they encountered Australia, where the match ended in a heart-wrenching 21-24 loss for Great Britain. A subsequent defeat against France in the 7th place play-off on Sunday meant the men also concluded their tournament in eighth place.
Ciaran Beattie, the Director of Rugby for Great Britain Sevens, commented, "For the Women's team, it has been a series of exceptionally tough results, but we are gaining valuable insights into our players. We are making progress, and there are certainly steps forward that we are looking to build upon."
He continued with regard to the men’s squad, stating, "It was fantastic to secure that win against New Zealand. However, looking at the bigger picture, we were competitive in nearly every match, aside from the first half of our opening game against France, which we need to focus on improving."
Beattie highlighted the competitiveness of the men’s division, noting, "The competition is incredibly tight; New Zealand, despite being fourth, has only managed to secure one victory, just like us, and yet we find ourselves in eighth place. This illustrates the high caliber of talent in this series. We understand the areas we need to enhance, but there is a palpable sense of confidence within the team that we are heading in the right direction. Our main focus now is on the upcoming event in Vancouver."
