Amidst the chaos of winter weather disruptions affecting tens of millions, the Hero World Challenge arrives just in time for a festive escape. Imagine cozying up by the fireplace, sipping hot cocoa, while watching the thrilling golf action unfold in the Bahamas, all while the snow falls outside. It's a unique blend of relaxation and excitement.
This week's tournament at Albany on New Providence Island features 20 PGA TOUR members, each eager to showcase their skills. The 10th edition of the Ernie Els-designed course promises an exhilarating experience.
The Hero World Challenge is a golfer's dream come true. With no cut, a $5 million purse, and a $1 million winner's prize, it's a golden opportunity for the qualifiers. Every golfer earns Official World Golf Ranking points, making it a highly coveted event.
Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion, seeks his third straight victory. In his previous two appearances, he finished second to Viktor Hovland. Scheffler's dominance is evident, having won his next two trips. This week, he aims for a three-peat, but Hovland, who didn't qualify last year, poses a challenge.
Scheffler's performance at Albany is impressive. In 16 competitive rounds, he averaged 67.25 on the par 72 course. His average in victories was even lower at 66.38. Last year, he set a tournament record with a 25-under 263 score, winning by six strokes. This was his ninth win worldwide in 2024, and he's already claimed six victories in 2025.
Albany, a challenging yet rewarding course, stretches to 7,449 yards with five par 3s and five par 5s. Its scoring average of 69.94 in 2023 and 2024 is comparable to other par 72 courses, with Grand Reserve Golf Club hosting the nearby Puerto Rico Open. Albany's unique layout features Bermuda grass, with 2-inch roughs for wayward strikes and smaller greens averaging 4,500 square feet.
Putting surfaces are regulated by a Stimpmeter, but easterly winds may adjust them mid-tournament. The weather forecast predicts warm temperatures around 80 degrees daily, with no significant rain expected.
Despite its unique pars, Albany has never hosted a playoff. The small field size is a factor, with only two winners prevailing by a single stroke since 2015. The Hero World Challenge is a must-watch event, offering an unforgettable blend of golf and holiday cheer.
