The gaming industry is poised for a remarkable comeback, and the numbers don't lie! Boston Consulting Group predicts a bright future, with global gaming revenue set to reach an impressive $350 million by 2030. But here's where it gets interesting: this growth is not just about traditional gaming platforms.
Mobile gaming, with its in-app purchases, is expected to be a major driver, accounting for a whopping 37% of global gaming revenue in 2025. Alternative app stores, a result of legal battles with tech giants, are also predicted to contribute significantly. Boston's research reveals that a substantial portion of adults and teenagers have already embraced these developer-owned web app stores, indicating a shift in consumer behavior.
Cloud gaming is another game-changer (pun intended!). Boston believes it will go mainstream within the next five years, with a projected revenue growth of over 1,200% by 2030. This shift towards 'multi-screen experiences' is particularly appealing to the Gen Alpha demographic, who prefer subscription-based and live-service games.
And this is the part most people miss: the democratization of game development through user-generated content (UGC) and AI. Boston claims that AI is already making waves, with 20% of games launched on an online platform utilizing AI technology. Additionally, UGC, whether it's user-created game modes or content generated using games, is a powerful growth driver, engaging players of all ages.
The firm also highlights an intriguing trend: more people are playing games than ever before, and this isn't just limited to the younger generations. Even gamers in their 60s and older are getting involved, with many expressing interest in UGC.
"The gaming industry is turning a corner, and we are optimistic about what comes next," says Boston partner and report coauthor Giorgo Paizanis.
"The post-pandemic slump is a thing of the past. Gamers' passion is evident in their growing leisure time spent playing. Parents who grew up gaming are passing on the tradition to their kids, and the accessibility of games across various devices and platforms is a game-changer (pun intended again!)."
Ernesto Pagano, Boston's managing director and senior partner, adds, "The next five years will bring an explosion of new gaming content and players. Cloud gaming, UGC, AI, and open app stores will revolutionize the industry. Players will demand more, and studios that embrace these changes will shape the future of gaming."
So, what do you think? Is the gaming industry ready to take on these challenges and opportunities? The future looks bright, but are there any potential pitfalls or controversies we should be aware of? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
